Make git tag a builtin. This replaces the script "git-tag.sh" with "builtin-tag.c". The existing test suite for "git tag" guarantees the compatibility with the features provided by the script version. There are some minor changes in the behaviour of "git tag" here: "git tag -v" now can get more than one tag to verify, like "git tag -d" does, "git tag" with no arguments prints all tags, more like "git branch" does, and "git tag -n" also prints all tags with annotations (without needing -l). Tests and documentation were also updated to reflect these changes. The program is currently calling the script "git verify-tag" for verify. tag: speed up --contains calculation When we want to know if commit A contains commit B (or any one of a set of commits, B through Z), we generally calculate the merge bases and see if B is a merge base of A (or for a set, if any of the commits B through Z have that property). When we are going to check a series of commits A1 through An to see whether each contains B (e.g., because we are deciding which tags to show with "git tag --contains"), we do a series of merge base calculations. This can be very expensive, as we repeat a lot of traversal work. Instead, let's leverage the fact that we are going to use the same --contains list for each tag, and mark areas of the commit graph is definitely containing those commits, or definitely not containing those commits. Later tags can then stop traversing as soon as they see a previously calculated answer. Split GPG interface into its own helper library This mostly moves existing code from builtin/tag.c (for signing) and builtin/verify-tag.c (for verifying) to a new gpg-interface.c file to provide a more generic library interface. - sign_buffer() takes a payload strbuf, a signature strbuf, and a signing key, runs "gpg" to produce a detached signature for the payload, and appends it to the signature strbuf. The contents of a signed tag that concatenates the payload and the detached signature can be produced by giving the same strbuf as payload and signature strbuf. - verify_signed_buffer() takes a payload and a detached signature as <ptr, len> pairs, and runs "gpg --verify" to see if the payload matches the signature. It can optionally capture the output from GPG to allow the callers to pretty-print it in a way more suitable for their contexts. "verify-tag" (aka "tag -v") used to save the whole tag contents as if it is a detached signature, and fed gpg the payload part of the tag. It relied on gpg to fail when the given tag is not signed but just is annotated. tag.c: use the correct algorithm for the '--contains' option In b7cc53e9 (tag.c: use 'ref-filter' APIs, 2015-09-11) we port tag.c to use the ref-filter APIs for filtering and printing refs. In ref-filter we have two implementations for filtering refs when the '--contains' option is used. Although they do the same thing, one is optimized for filtering branches and the other for tags (borrowed from branch.c and tag.c respectively) and the 'filter->with_commit_tag_algo' bit decides which algorithm must be used. We should unify these. When we ported tag.c to use ref-filter APIs we missed out on setting the 'filter->with_commit_tag_algo' bit. As reported by Jerry Snitselaar, this causes "git tag --contains" to work way slower than expected, fix this by setting 'filter->with_commit_tag_algo' in tag.c before calling 'filter_refs()'. builtin-tag.c: Fix two memory leaks and minor notation changes. A repeated call to read_sha1_file was not freing memory when the buffer was allocated but returned size was zero. Also, now the program does not allow many -F or -m options, which was a bug too because it was not freing the memory allocated for any previous -F or -m options. Convert many resolve_ref() calls to read_ref*() and ref_exists() resolve_ref() may return a pointer to a static buffer, which is not safe for long-term use because if another resolve_ref() call happens, the buffer may be changed. Many call sites though do not care about this buffer. They simply check if the return value is NULL or not. Convert all these call sites to new wrappers to reduce resolve_ref() calls from 57 to 34. Split GPG interface into its own helper library This mostly moves existing code from builtin/tag.c (for signing) and builtin/verify-tag.c (for verifying) to a new gpg-interface.c file to provide a more generic library interface. - sign_buffer() takes a payload strbuf, a signature strbuf, and a signing key, runs "gpg" to produce a detached signature for the payload, and appends it to the signature strbuf. The contents of a signed tag that concatenates the payload and the detached signature can be produced by giving the same strbuf as payload and signature strbuf. - verify_signed_buffer() takes a payload and a detached signature as <ptr, len> pairs, and runs "gpg --verify" to see if the payload matches the signature. It can optionally capture the output from GPG to allow the callers to pretty-print it in a way more suitable for their contexts. "verify-tag" (aka "tag -v") used to save the whole tag contents as if it is a detached signature, and fed gpg the payload part of the tag. It relied on gpg to fail when the given tag is not signed but just is annotated. Split GPG interface into its own helper library This mostly moves existing code from builtin/tag.c (for signing) and builtin/verify-tag.c (for verifying) to a new gpg-interface.c file to provide a more generic library interface. - sign_buffer() takes a payload strbuf, a signature strbuf, and a signing key, runs "gpg" to produce a detached signature for the payload, and appends it to the signature strbuf. The contents of a signed tag that concatenates the payload and the detached signature can be produced by giving the same strbuf as payload and signature strbuf. - verify_signed_buffer() takes a payload and a detached signature as <ptr, len> pairs, and runs "gpg --verify" to see if the payload matches the signature. It can optionally capture the output from GPG to allow the callers to pretty-print it in a way more suitable for their contexts. "verify-tag" (aka "tag -v") used to save the whole tag contents as if it is a detached signature, and fed gpg the payload part of the tag. It relied on gpg to fail when the given tag is not signed but just is annotated. Make git tag a builtin. This replaces the script "git-tag.sh" with "builtin-tag.c". The existing test suite for "git tag" guarantees the compatibility with the features provided by the script version. There are some minor changes in the behaviour of "git tag" here: "git tag -v" now can get more than one tag to verify, like "git tag -d" does, "git tag" with no arguments prints all tags, more like "git branch" does, and "git tag -n" also prints all tags with annotations (without needing -l). Tests and documentation were also updated to reflect these changes. The program is currently calling the script "git verify-tag" for verify. Files given on the command line are relative to $cwd When running "git commit -F file" and "git tag -F file" from a subdirectory, we should take it as relative to the directory we started from, not relative to the top-level directory. This adds a helper function "parse_options_fix_filename()" to make it more convenient to fix this class of issues. Ideally, parse_options() should support a new type of option, "OPT_FILENAME", to do this uniformly, but this patch is meant to go to 'maint' to fix it minimally. One thing to note is that value for "commit template file" that comes from the command line is taken as relative to $cwd just like other parameters, but when it comes from the configuration varilable 'commit.template', it is taken as relative to the working tree root as before. Split GPG interface into its own helper library This mostly moves existing code from builtin/tag.c (for signing) and builtin/verify-tag.c (for verifying) to a new gpg-interface.c file to provide a more generic library interface. - sign_buffer() takes a payload strbuf, a signature strbuf, and a signing key, runs "gpg" to produce a detached signature for the payload, and appends it to the signature strbuf. The contents of a signed tag that concatenates the payload and the detached signature can be produced by giving the same strbuf as payload and signature strbuf. - verify_signed_buffer() takes a payload and a detached signature as <ptr, len> pairs, and runs "gpg --verify" to see if the payload matches the signature. It can optionally capture the output from GPG to allow the callers to pretty-print it in a way more suitable for their contexts. "verify-tag" (aka "tag -v") used to save the whole tag contents as if it is a detached signature, and fed gpg the payload part of the tag. It relied on gpg to fail when the given tag is not signed but just is annotated. Convert many resolve_ref() calls to read_ref*() and ref_exists() resolve_ref() may return a pointer to a static buffer, which is not safe for long-term use because if another resolve_ref() call happens, the buffer may be changed. Many call sites though do not care about this buffer. They simply check if the return value is NULL or not. Convert all these call sites to new wrappers to reduce resolve_ref() calls from 57 to 34. If we change resolve_ref() prototype later on to avoid passing static buffer out, this helps reduce changes.
