The new "--show-current-patch" option gives an end-user facing way
to get the diff being applied when "git rebase" (and "git am")
stops with a conflict.

We have several callers like
if (active_cache_changed && write_locked_index(...))
handle_error();
rollback_lock_file(...);
where the final rollback is needed because "!active_cache_changed"
shortcuts the if-expression. There are also a few variants of this,
including some if-else constructs that make it more clear when the
explicit rollback is really needed.
Teach `write_locked_index()` to take a new flag SKIP_IF_UNCHANGED and
simplify the callers. Leave the most complicated of the callers (in
builtin/update-index.c) unchanged. Rewriting it to use this new flag
would end up duplicating logic.
We could have made the new flag behave the other way round
("FORCE_WRITE"), but that could break existing users behind their backs.
Let's take the more conservative approach. We can still migrate existing
callers to use our new flag. Later we might even be able to flip the
default, possibly without entirely ignoring the risk to in-flight or
out-of-tree topics.

If `commit_lock_file()` or `hold_lock_file_for_update()` fail, there is
no need to call `rollback_lock_file()` on the lockfile. It doesn't hurt
either, but it does make different callers in this file inconsistent,
which might be confusing.
While at it, remove a trailing '.' from a recurring error message.

One of these functions fails to always roll back the lock. That will be

The sequencer infrastructure is shared across "git cherry-pick",
"git rebase -i", etc., and has always spawned "git commit" when it
needs to create a commit. It has been taught to do so internally,
when able, by reusing the codepath "git commit" itself uses, which
gives performance boost for a few tens of percents in some sample
scenarios.

The new command `git rebase --show-current-patch` is useful for seeing
the commit related to the current rebase state. Some however may find
the "git show" command behind it too limiting. You may want to
increase context lines, do a diff that ignores whitespaces...
For these advanced use cases, the user can execute any command they
want with the new pseudo ref REBASE_HEAD.
This also helps show where the stopped commit is from, which is hard
to see from the previous patch which implements --show-current-patch.

Commit 356ee4659b ("sequencer: try to commit without forking 'git
commit'", 2017-11-24) forgot to run the 'prepare-commit-msg' hook when
creating the commit. Fix this by writing the commit message to a
different file and running the hook. Using a different file means that
if the commit is cancelled the original message file is
unchanged. Also move the checks for an empty commit so the order
matches 'git commit'.

The gpg_sign member of the replay_opts structure is of type `char *`,
meaning that the sequencer deems the string to which gpg_sign points to
be under its custody, i.e. it needs to be free()d by the sequencer.
Therefore, let's only assign malloc()ed buffers to it.

Historically, the diff machinery for rename detection had a
hardcoded limit of 32k paths; this is being lifted to allow users
trade cycles with a (possibly) easier to read result.

An infrastructure to define what hash function is used in Git is
introduced, and an effort to plumb that throughout various
codepaths has been started.

The previous config handling relied on global variables, called
git_default_config() even when the key had already been handled by
git_sequencer_config() and did not initialize the diff configuration
variables. Improve this by: i) loading the default values for message
cleanup and gpg signing of commits into struct replay_opts;
ii) restructuring the code to return immediately once a key is
handled; and iii) calling git_diff_basic_config(). Note that
unfortunately it is not possible to return early if the key is handled
by git_gpg_config() as it does not indicate to the caller if the key
has been handled or not.
The sequencer should probably have been calling
git_diff_basic_config() before as it creates a patch when there are
conflicts. The shell version uses 'diff-tree' to create the patch so
calling git_diff_basic_config() should match that. Although 'git
commit' calls git_diff_ui_config() I don't think the output of
print_commit_summary() is affected by anything that is loaded by that
as print_commit_summary() always turns on rename detection so would
ignore the value in the user's configuration anyway. The other values
loaded by git_diff_ui_config() are about the formatting of patches so
are not relevant to print_commit_summary().

The sequencer machinery (used by "git cherry-pick A..B", and "git
rebase -i", among other things) would have lost a commit if stopped
due to an unlockable index file, which has been fixed.

If the commit message does not need to be edited then create the
commit without forking 'git commit'. Taking the best time of ten runs
with a warm cache this reduces the time taken to cherry-pick 10
commits by 27% (from 282ms to 204ms), and the time taken by 'git
rebase --continue' to pick 10 commits by 45% (from 386ms to 212ms) on
my computer running linux. Some of greater saving for rebase is
because it no longer wastes time creating the commit summary just to
throw it away.
The code to create the commit is based on builtin/commit.c. It is
simplified as it doesn't have to deal with merges and modified so that
it does not die but returns an error to make sure the sequencer exits
cleanly, as it would when forking 'git commit'
Even when not forking 'git commit' the commit message is written to a
file and CHERRY_PICK_HEAD is created unnecessarily. This could be
eliminated in future. I hacked up a version that does not write these
files and just passed an strbuf (with the wrong message for fixup and
squash commands) to do_commit() but I couldn't measure any significant
time difference when running cherry-pick or rebase. I think
eliminating the writes properly for rebase would require a bit of
effort as the code would need to be restructured.

Add the Signed-off-by: trailer in one place rather than adding it to
the message when doing a recursive merge and specifying '--signoff'
when running 'git commit'. This means that if there are conflicts when
merging with a strategy other than 'recursive' the Signed-off-by:
trailer will be added if the user commits the resolution themselves
without passing '--signoff' to 'git commit'. It also simplifies the
in-process commit that is about to be added to the sequencer.

Move print_commit_summary() from builtin/commit.c to sequencer.c so it
can be shared with other commands. The function is modified by
changing the last argument to a flag so callers can specify whether
they want to show the author date in addition to specifying if this is
an initial commit.
If the sequencer dies in print_commit_summary() (which can only happen
when cherry-picking or reverting) then neither the todo list nor the
abort safety file are updated to reflect the commit that was just
made. print_commit_summary() can die if:
- The commit that was just created cannot be found or parsed.
- HEAD cannot be resolved either because some other process is
updating it (which is bad news in the middle of a cherry-pick) or
because it is corrupt.
- log_tree_commit() cannot read some objects.
In all those cases dying will leave the sequencer in a sane state for
aborting; 'git cherry-pick --abort' will rewind HEAD to the last
successful commit before there was a problem with HEAD or the object
database. If the user somehow fixes the problem and runs 'git
cherry-pick --continue' then the sequencer will try and pick the same
commit again which may or may not be what the user wants depending on
what caused print_commit_summary() to die. If print_commit_summary()
returned an error instead then update_abort_safety_file() would try to
resolve HEAD which may or may not be successful. If it is successful
then running 'git rebase --abort' would not rewind HEAD to the last
successful commit which is not what we want.

Move run_rewrite_hook() from bulitin/commit.c to sequencer.c so it can
be shared with other commands and add a new function
commit_post_rewrite() based on the code in builtin/commit.c that
encapsulates rewriting notes and running the post-rewrite hook. Once
the sequencer learns how to create commits without forking 'git
commit' these functions will be used when squashing commits.

If the index cannot be locked in do_recursive_merge(), issue an
error message and go on to the error recovery codepath, instead of
dying. When the commit cannot be picked, it needs to be rescheduled
when performing an interactive rebase, but just dying there won't
allow that to happen, and when the user runs 'git rebase --continue'
rather than 'git rebase --abort', the commit gets silently dropped.

When we replaced the old shell script based interactive rebase in
commmit 18633e1a22 ("rebase -i: use the rebase--helper builtin",
2017-02-09) we introduced a regression of functionality in that the
GIT_DIR would be sent to the environment of the exec command as-is.
This generally meant that it would be passed as "GIT_DIR=.git", which
causes problems for any exec command that wants to run git commands in
a subdirectory.
This isn't a very large regression, since it is not that likely that the
exec command will run a git command, and even less likely that it will
need to do so in a subdir. This regression was discovered by a build
system which uses git-describe to find the current version of the build
system, and happened to do so from the src/ sub directory of the
project.
Fix this by passing in the absolute path of the git directory into the
child environment.

We cannot add many more flags to the diff machinery due to the
limitations of the number of flags that can be stored in a single
unsigned int. In order to allow for more flags to be added to the diff
machinery in the future this patch converts the flags to be stored in
bitfields in 'struct diff_flags'.

NULL pointer check which was previously inserted around a dereference;

When the write opertion fails, we write that we could
not read. Change the error message to match the operation
and remove the full stop at the end.
When ftruncate() fails, we write that we couldn't finish
the operation on the todo file. It is more accurate to write
that we couldn't truncate as we do in other calls of ftruncate().

If the original version of `write_locked_index()` returned with an
error, it didn't roll back the lockfile unless the error occured at the
very end, during closing/committing. See commit 03b866477 (read-cache:
new API write_locked_index instead of write_index/write_cache,
2014-06-13).
In commit 9f41c7a6b (read-cache: close index.lock in do_write_index,
2017-04-26), we learned to close the lock slightly earlier in the
callstack. That was mostly a side-effect of lockfiles being implemented
using temporary files, but didn't cause any real harm.
Recently, commit 076aa2cbd (tempfile: auto-allocate tempfiles on heap,
2017-09-05) introduced a subtle bug. If the temporary file is deleted
(i.e., the lockfile is rolled back), the tempfile-pointer in the `struct
lock_file` will be left dangling. Thus, an attempt to reuse the
lockfile, or even just to roll it back, will induce undefined behavior
-- most likely a crash.
Besides not crashing, we clearly want to make things consistent. The
guarantees which the lockfile-machinery itself provides is A) if we ask
to commit and it fails, roll back, and B) if we ask to close and it
fails, do _not_ roll back. Let's do the same for consistency.
Do not delete the temporary file in `do_write_index()`. One of its
callers, `write_locked_index()` will thereby avoid rolling back the
lock. The other caller, `write_shared_index()`, will delete its
temporary file anyway. Both of these callers will avoid undefined
behavior (crashing).
Teach `write_locked_index(..., COMMIT_LOCK)` to roll back the lock
before returning. If we have already succeeded and committed, it will be
a noop. Simplify the existing callers where we now have a superfluous
call to `rollback_lockfile()`. That should keep future readers from
wondering why the callers are inconsistent.

Interactive rebase was ignoring '--rerere-autoupdate'. Fix this by
reading it appropriate file when restoring the sequencer state for an
interactive rebase and passing '--rerere-autoupdate' to merge and
cherry-pick when rebasing with '--preserve-merges'.

This operation has quadratic complexity, which is especially painful
on Windows, where shell scripts are *already* slow (mainly due to the
overhead of the POSIX emulation layer).
Let's reimplement this with linear complexity (using a hash map to
match the commits' subject lines) for the common case; Sadly, the
fixup/squash feature's design neglected performance considerations,
allowing arbitrary prefixes (read: `fixup! hell` will match the
commit subject `hello world`), which means that we are stuck with
quadratic performance in the worst case.
The reimplemented logic also happens to fix a bug where commented-out
lines (representing empty patches) were dropped by the previous code.
While at it, clarify how the fixup/squash feature works in `git rebase
-i`'s man page.

Note: The original code did not try to skip unnecessary picks of root
commits but punts instead (probably --root was not considered common

This is crucial to improve performance on Windows, as the speed is now
mostly dominated by the SHA-1 transformation (because it spawns a new
rev-parse process for *every* line, and spawning processes is pretty
slow from Git for Windows' MSYS2 Bash).

The first step of an interactive rebase is to generate the so-called "todo
script", to be stored in the state directory as "git-rebase-todo" and to
be edited by the user.
Originally, we adjusted the output of `git log <options>` using a simple
sed script. Over the course of the years, the code became more
complicated. We now use shell scripting to edit the output of `git log`
conditionally, depending whether to keep "empty" commits (i.e. commits
that do not change any files).
On platforms where shell scripting is not native, this can be a serious
drag. And it opens the door for incompatibilities between platforms when
it comes to shell scripting or to Unix-y commands.
Let's just re-implement the todo script generation in plain C, using the
revision machinery directly.
This is substantially faster, improving the speed relative to the
shell script version of the interactive rebase from 2x to 3x on Windows.
Note that the rearrange_squash() function in git-rebase--interactive
relied on the fact that we set the "format" variable to the config setting
rebase.instructionFormat. Relying on a side effect like this is no good,
hence we explicitly perform that assignment (possibly again) in
rearrange_squash().

The rebase messages are printed to stderr traditionally. However due
to a bug introduced in 587947750b (rebase: implement --[no-]autostash
and rebase.autostash, 2013-05-12) which was faithfully copied when
reimplementing parts of the interactive rebase in the sequencer the
autostash messages are printed to stdout instead.
It is time to fix that: let's print the autostash messages to stderr
instead of stdout.

Update the C style recommendation for notes for translators, as
recent versions of gettext tools can work with our style of
multi-line comments.

Change all the "TRANSLATORS: [...]" comments in the C code to use the
regular Git coding style, and amend the style guide so that the
example there uses that style.
This custom style was necessary back in 2010 when the gettext support
was initially added, and was subsequently documented in commit
cbcfd4e3ea ("i18n: mention "TRANSLATORS:" marker in
Documentation/CodingGuidelines", 2014-04-18).
GNU xgettext hasn't had the parsing limitation that necessitated this
exception for almost 3 years. Since its 0.19 release on 2014-06-02
it's been able to recognize TRANSLATOR comments in the standard Git
comment syntax[1].
Usually we'd like to keep compatibility with software that's that
young, but in this case literally the only person who needs to be
using a gettext newer than 3 years old is Jiang Xin (the only person
who runs & commits "make pot" results), so I think in this case we can
make an exception.
This xgettext parsing feature was added after a thread on the Git
mailing list[2] which continued on the bug-gettext[3] list, but we
never subsequently changed our style & styleguide, do so.
There are already longstanding changes in git that use the standard
comment style & have their TRANSLATORS comments extracted properly
without getting the literal "*"'s mixed up in the text, as would
happen before xgettext 0.19.
Commit 7ff2683253 ("builtin-am: implement -i/--interactive",
2015-08-04) added one such comment, which in commit df0617bfa7 ("l10n:
git.pot: v2.6.0 round 1 (123 new, 41 removed)", 2015-09-05) got picked
up in the po/git.pot file with the right format, showing that Jiang
already runs a modern xgettext.
The xgettext parser does not handle the sort of non-standard comment
style that I'm amending here in sequencer.c, but that isn't standard
Git comment syntax anyway. With this change to sequencer.c & "make
pot" the comment in the pot file is now correct:

When fopen() returns NULL, it could be because the given path does not
exist, but it could also be some other errors and the caller has to

The shell version of rebase -i silences the status output from 'git
stash apply' when restoring the autostashed changes. The C version
does not.
Having the output from git stash apply on the screen is
distracting as it makes it difficult to find the message from git
rebase saying that the rebase succeeded. Also the status information
that git stash prints talks about looking in .git/rebase-merge/done to
see which commits have been applied. As .git/rebase-merge is removed
shortly after the message is printed before rebase -i exits this is
confusing.

When rebase -i was converted to C a bug was introduced into the code
that creates the reflog message. Instead of saying
rebase -i (finish): <head-name> onto <onto>
it says
rebase -i (finish): <head-name> onto <orig-head><onto>
as the strbuf is not reset between reading the value of <orig-head>
and <onto>.

mishandled a trailer block whose last line is an incomplete line.
This has been fixed so that an additional sign-off etc. are added
after completing the existing incomplete line.

Convert lookup_commit, lookup_commit_or_die,
lookup_commit_reference, and lookup_commit_reference_gently to take
struct object_id arguments.
Introduce a temporary in parse_object buffer in order to convert this
function. This is required since in order to convert parse_object and
parse_object_buffer, lookup_commit_reference_gently and
lookup_commit_or_die would need to be converted. Not introducing a
temporary would therefore require that lookup_commit_or_die take a
struct object_id *, but lookup_commit would take unsigned char *,
leaving a confusing and hard-to-use interface.
parse_object_buffer will lose this temporary in a later patch.

"git rebase -i" failed to re-read the todo list file when the
command specified with the `exec` instruction updated it.

In the scripted version of the interactive rebase, there was no internal
representation of the todo list; it was re-read before every command.
That allowed the hack that an `exec` command could append (or even
completely rewrite) the todo list.
This hack was broken by the partial conversion of the interactive rebase
to C, and this patch reinstates it.
We also add a small test to verify that this fix does not regress in the
future.

When encountering a commit message that does not end in a newline,
sequencer does not complete the line before determining if a blank line
should be added. This causes the "(cherry picked..." and sign-off lines
to sometimes appear on the same line as the last line of the commit
message.
This behavior was introduced by commit 967dfd4 ("sequencer: use
trailer's trailer layout", 2016-11-29). However, a revert of that commit
would not resolve this issue completely: prior to that commit, a
conforming footer was deemed to be non-conforming by
has_conforming_footer() if there was no terminating newline, resulting
in both conforming and non-conforming footers being treated the same
when they should not be.
Resolve this issue, both for conforming and non-conforming footers, and
in both do_pick_commit() and append_signoff(), by always adding a
newline to the commit message if it does not end in one before checking
the footer for conformity.

A recent update to "rebase -i" stopped running hooks for the "git
commit" command during "reword" action, which has been fixed.

The `reword` command used to call `git commit` in a manner that asks for
the prepare-commit-msg and commit-msg hooks to do their thing.
Converting that part of the interactive rebase to C code introduced the
regression where those hooks were no longer run.
Let's fix this.
Note: the flag is called `VERIFY_MSG` instead of the more intuitive

So far every time we need to tweak the behaviour of run_git_commit()
we have been adding a "int" parameter to it. As the function gains
parameters and different callsites having different needs, this is
becoming a maintenance burden. When a new knob needs to be added to
address a specific need for a single callsite, all the other callsites
need to add a "no, I do not want anything special with respect to the
new knob" argument.
Consolidate the existing four parameters into a flag word to make it
more maintainable, as we will be adding a new one to the mix soon.

When using rebase --interactive where one of the lines is marked as
'edit' this is the resulting output:
Stopped at ec3b9c4... stuffYou can amend the commit now, with

Once you are satisfied with your changes, run

A newline character is missing at the end of the "Stopped at ..." line and
before the "You can amend ..." line. This patch fixes the malformed output by
adding the missing newline character to the end of the "Stopped at ..." line.

Since the conversion from shell to C in 56dc3ab04 (sequencer
(rebase -i): implement the 'edit' command, 2017-01-02),
stopping at an "edit" instruction went from:

Instead of using the convenience function run_command_v_opt_cd_env(), we
now use the run_command() function. The former function is simply a
wrapper of the latter, trying to make it more convenient to use.
However, we already have to construct the argv and the env parameters,
and we will need even finer control e.g. over the output of the command,
so let's just stop using the convenience function.

Rather than abusing a strbuf to come up with an environment block,

The interactive rebase has the very special magic that a cherry-pick
that exits with a status different from 0 and 1 signifies a failure to
even record that a cherry-pick was started.
This can happen e.g. when a fast-forward fails because it would
overwrite untracked files.
In that case, we must reschedule the command that we thought we already
had at least started successfully.

Git's `rebase` command inspects the `rebase.autostash` config setting
to determine whether it should stash any uncommitted changes before
rebasing and re-apply them afterwards.
As we introduce more bits and pieces to let the sequencer act as
interactive rebase's backend, here is the part that adds support for
the autostash feature.

An interactive rebase operates on a detached HEAD (to keep the reflog
of the original branch relatively clean), and updates the branch only
at the end.
Now that the sequencer learns to perform interactive rebases, it also
needs to learn the trick to update the branch before removing the
directory containing the state of the interactive rebase.
We introduce a new head_ref variable in a wider scope than necessary at
the moment, to allow for a later patch that prints out "Successfully
rebased and updated <ref>".

When the last command of an interactive rebase fails, the user needs to
resolve the problem and then continue the interactive rebase. Naturally,
the todo script is empty by then. So let's not complain about that!
To that end, let's move that test out of the function that parses the
todo script, and into the more high-level function read_populate_todo().
This is also necessary by now because the lower-level parse_insn_buffer()
has no idea whether we are performing an interactive rebase or not.

When a cherry-pick continues without a "todo script", the intention is
simply to pick a single commit.
However, when an interactive rebase is continued without a "todo
script", it means that the last command has been completed and that we
now need to clean up.
This commit guards the revert/cherry-pick specific steps so that they
are not executed in rebase -i mode.

When an interactive rebase is interrupted, the user may stage changes
before continuing, and we need to commit those changes in that case.
Please note that the nested "if" added to the sequencer_continue() is
not combined into a single "if" because it will be extended with an
"else" clause in a later patch in this patch series.

to record the author information for the current commit. As we are about

This is a huge patch, and at the same time a huge step forward to
execute the performance-critical parts of the interactive rebase in a
builtin command.
Since 'fixup' and 'squash' are not only similar, but also need to know
about each other (we want to reduce a series of fixups/squashes into a
single, final commit message edit, from the user's point of view), we
really have to implement them both at the same time.
Most of the actual work is done by the existing code path that already
handles the "pick" and the "edit" commands; We added support for other
features (e.g. to amend the commit message) in the patches leading up to
this one, yet there are still quite a few bits in this patch that simply
would not make sense as individual patches (such as: determining whether
there was anything to "fix up" in the "todo" script, etc).
In theory, it would be possible to reuse the fast-forward code path also
for the fixup and the squash code paths, but in practice this would make
the code less readable. The end result cannot be fast-forwarded anyway,
therefore let's just extend the cherry-picking code path for now.
Since the sequencer parses the entire `git-rebase-todo` script in one go,
fixup or squash commands without a preceding pick can be reported early
(in git-rebase--interactive, we could only report such errors just before
executing the fixup/squash).

In the interactive rebase, commands that were successfully processed are
not simply discarded, but appended to the 'done' file instead. This is
used e.g. to display the current state to the user in the output of
`git status` or the progress.

When calling `git rebase -i -v`, the user wants to see some statistics
after the commits were rebased. Let's show some.
The strbuf we use to perform that task will be used for other things
in subsequent commits, hence it is declared and initialized in a wider
scope than strictly needed here.

The 'exec' command is a little special among rebase -i's commands, as it
does *not* have a SHA-1 as first parameter. Instead, everything after the
`exec` command is treated as command-line to execute.
Let's reuse the arg/arg_len fields of the todo_item structure (which hold
the oneline for pick/edit commands) to point to the command-line.

This patch is a straight-forward reimplementation of the `edit`
operation of the interactive rebase command.
Well, not *quite* straight-forward: when stopping, the `edit`
command wants to write the `patch` file (which is not only the
patch, but includes the commit message and author information). To
that end, this patch requires the earlier work that taught the
log-tree machinery to respect the `file` setting of
rev_info->diffopt to write to a file stream different than stdout.

The 'noop' command is probably the most boring of all rebase -i commands
to support in the sequencer.
Which makes it an excellent candidate for this first stab to add support
for rebase -i's commands to the sequencer.
For the moment, let's also treat empty lines and commented-out lines as
'noop'; We will refine that handling later in this patch series.
To make it easier to identify "classes" of todo_commands (such as:
determine whether a command is pick-like, i.e. handles a single commit),
let's enforce a certain order of said commands.

It is actually not safe to look for a commit message by looking for the
first empty line and skipping it.
The find_commit_subject() function looks more carefully, so let's use
it. Since we are interested in the entire commit message, we re-compute
the string length after verifying that the commit subject is not empty
(in which case the entire commit message would be empty, something that
should not happen but that we want to handle gracefully).

Unlike "git am --abort", "git cherry-pick --abort" moved HEAD back
to where cherry-pick started while picking multiple changes, when
the cherry-pick stopped to ask for help from the user, and the user
did "git reset --hard" to a different commit in order to re-attempt
the operation.

Git 2.11 had a minor regression in "merge --ff-only" that competed
with another process that simultanously attempted to update the
index. We used to explain what went wrong with an error message,
but the new code silently failed. The error message has been
resurrected.

In contrast to "git am --abort", a sequencer abort did not check
whether the current HEAD is the one that is expected. This can lead
to loss of work (when not spotted and resolved using reflog before
the garbage collector chimes in).
This behavior is now changed by mimicking "git am --abort". The
abortion is done but HEAD is not changed when the current HEAD is
not the expected HEAD.
A new file "sequencer/abort-safety" is added to save the expected
HEAD.
The new behavior is only active when --abort is invoked on multiple
picks. The problem does not occur for the single-pick case because
it is handled differently.

Callers of the hold_locked_index() function pass 0 when they want to
prepare to write a new version of the index file without wishing to
die or emit an error message when the request fails (e.g. somebody
else already held the lock), and pass 1 when they want the call to
die upon failure.
This option is called LOCK_DIE_ON_ERROR by the underlying lockfile
API, and the hold_locked_index() function translates the paramter to
LOCK_DIE_ON_ERROR when calling the hold_lock_file_for_update().
Replace these hardcoded '1' with LOCK_DIE_ON_ERROR and stop
translating. Callers other than the ones that are replaced with
this change pass '0' to the function; no behaviour change is
intended with this patch.

Among the callers of hold_locked_index() that passes 0:
- diff.c::refresh_index_quietly() at the end of "git diff" is an
opportunistic update; it leaks the lockfile structure but it is
just before the program exits and nobody should care.
- builtin/describe.c::cmd_describe(),
builtin/commit.c::cmd_status(),
sequencer.c::read_and_refresh_cache() are all opportunistic
updates and they are OK.
- builtin/update-index.c::cmd_update_index() takes a lock upfront
but we may end up not needing to update the index (i.e. the
entries may be fully up-to-date), in which case we do not need to
issue an error upon failure to acquire the lock. We do diagnose
and die if we indeed need to update, so it is OK.
- wt-status.c::require_clean_work_tree() IS BUGGY. It asks
silence, does not check the returned value. Compare with
callsites like cmd_describe() and cmd_status() to notice that it
is wrong to call update_index_if_able() unconditionally.
Make sequencer use trailer.c's trailer layout definition, as opposed to
parsing the footer by itself. This makes "commit -s", "cherry-pick -x",
and "format-patch --signoff" consistent with trailer, allowing
non-trailer lines and multiple-line trailers in trailer blocks under
certain conditions, and therefore suppressing the extra newline in those
cases.
Consistency with trailer extends to respecting trailer configs. Tests
have been included to show that.

Silence a clang warning introduced by a recently graduated topic.

When clang compiles sequencer.c, it complains:

This is because "command" is an enum that may only have two
values (0 and 1) and the array in question has two elements.
As it turns out, clang is actually wrong here, at least
according to its own bug tracker:
https://llvm.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=16154
But it's still worth working around this, as the warning is
present with -Wall, meaning we fail compilation with "make
DEVELOPER=1".
Casting the enum to size_t sufficiently unconfuses clang. As
a bonus, it also catches any possible out-of-bounds access
if the enum takes on a negative value (which shouldn't
happen either, but again, this is a defensive check).

When new paths were added by "git add -N" to the index, it was
enough to circumvent the check by "git commit" to refrain from
making an empty commit without "--allow-empty". The same logic
prevented "git status" to show such a path as "new file" in the
"Changes not staged for commit" section.

If i-t-a entries are present and there is no change between the index
and HEAD i-t-a entries, index_differs_from() still returns "dirty, new
entries" (aka, the resulting commit is not empty), but cache-tree will
skip i-t-a entries and produce the exact same tree of current
commit.
index_differs_from() is supposed to catch this so we can abort
git-commit (unless --no-empty is specified). Update it to optionally
ignore i-t-a entries when doing a diff between the index and HEAD so
that it would return "no change" in this case and abort commit.

Quite a few error messages touched by this developer during the work to
speed up rebase -i started with an upper case letter, violating our
current conventions. Instead of sneaking in this fix (and forgetting
quite a few error messages), let's just have one wholesale patch fixing
all of the error messages in the sequencer.
While at it, the funny "error: Error wrapping up..." was changed to a
less funny, but more helpful, "error: failed to finalize...".

The definition of this function goes back all the way to 043a449
(sequencer: factor code out of revert builtin, 2012-01-11), long before a
serious effort was made to translate all the error messages.
It is slightly out of the context of the current patch series (whose
purpose it is to re-implement the performance critical parts of the
interactive rebase in C) to make the error messages in the sequencer
translatable, but what the heck. We'll just do it while we're looking at
this part of the code.

The sequencer was introduced to make the cherry-pick and revert
functionality available as library function, with the original idea
being to extend the sequencer to also implement the rebase -i
functionality.
The test to ensure that all of the commands in the script are identical
to the overall operation does not mesh well with that.
Therefore let's disable the test in rebase -i mode.
While at it, error out early if the "instruction sheet" (i.e. the todo
script) could not be parsed.

This commit prepares for future callers that will have a pointer/length
to some text to be written that lacks an LF, yet an LF is desired.
Instead of requiring the caller to append an LF to the buffer (and
potentially allocate memory to do so), the write_message() function
learns to append an LF at the end of the file.

Previously, we required an strbuf. But that limits the use case too much.
In the upcoming patch series (for which the current patch series prepares
the sequencer), we will want to write content to a file for which we have
a pointer and a length, not an strbuf.

The run_git_commit() function already knows how to amend commits, and
with this new option, it can also clean up commit messages (i.e. strip
out commented lines). This is needed to implement rebase -i's 'fixup'
and 'squash' commands as sequencer commands.

In the upcoming commits, we will implement more and more of rebase -i's
functionality inside the sequencer. One particular feature of the
commands to come is that some of them allow editing the commit message
while others don't, i.e. we cannot define in the replay_opts whether the
commit message should be edited or not.
Let's add a new parameter to the run_git_commit() function. Previously,
it was the duty of the caller to ensure that the opts->edit setting
indicates whether to let the user edit the commit message or not,
indicating that it is an "all or nothing" setting, i.e. that the
sequencer wants to let the user edit *all* commit message, or none at
all. In the upcoming rebase -i mode, it will depend on the particular
command that is currently executed, though.

As we are slowly teaching the sequencer to perform the hard work for
the interactive rebase, we need to read files that were written by
shell scripts.
These files typically contain a single line and are invariably ended
by a line feed (and possibly a carriage return before that). Let's use
a helper to read such files and to remove the line ending.

In interactive rebases, we commit a little bit differently than the
sequencer did so far: we heed the "author-script", the "message" and the
"amend" files in the .git/rebase-merge/ subdirectory.
Likewise, we may want to edit the commit message *even* when providing a
file containing the suggested commit message. Therefore we change the
code to not even provide a default message when we do not want any, and
to call the editor explicitly.
Also, in "interactive rebase" mode we want to skip reading the options
in the state directory of the cherry-pick/revert commands.
Finally, as interactive rebase's GPG settings are configured differently
from how cherry-pick (and therefore sequencer) handles them, we will
leave support for that to the next commit.

The `git-rebase-todo` file contains a list of commands. Most of those
commands have the form
<verb> <sha1> <oneline>
The <oneline> is displayed primarily for the user's convenience, as
rebase -i really interprets only the <verb> <sha1> part. However, there
are *some* places in interactive rebase where the <oneline> is used to
display messages, e.g. for reporting at which commit we stopped.
So let's just remember it when parsing the todo file; we keep a copy of
the entire todo file anyway (to write out the new `done` and
`git-rebase-todo` file just before processing each command), so all we
need to do is remember the begin offsets and lengths.
As we will have to parse and remember the command-line for `exec` commands
later, we do not call the field "oneline" but rather "arg" (and will reuse
that for exec's command-line).

The subcommands are used exactly once, at the very beginning of
sequencer_pick_revisions(), to determine what to do. This is an
unnecessary level of indirection: we can simply call the correct
function to begin with. So let's do that.
While at it, ensure that the subcommands return an error code so that
they do not have to die() all over the place (bad practice for library
functions...).

It is not unheard of that editors on Windows write CR/LF even if the
file originally had only LF. This is particularly awkward for exec lines
of a rebase -i todo sheet. Take for example the insn "exec echo": The
shell script parser splits at the LF and leaves the CR attached to
"echo", which leads to the unknown command "echo\r".
Work around that by stripping CR when reading the todo commands, as we
already do for LF.
This happens to fix t9903.14 and .15 in MSYS1 environments (with the
rebase--helper patches based on this patch series): the todo script
constructed in such a setup contains CR/LF thanks to MSYS1 runtime's
cleverness.

When we came up with the "sequencer" idea, we really wanted to have
kind of a plumbing equivalent of the interactive rebase. Hence the
choice of words: the "todo" script, a "pick", etc.
However, when it came time to implement the entire shebang, somehow this
idea got lost and the sequencer was used as working horse for
cherry-pick and revert instead. So as not to interfere with the
interactive rebase, it even uses a separate directory to store its
state.
Furthermore, it also is stupidly strict about the "todo" script it
accepts: while it parses commands in a way that was *designed* to be
similar to the interactive rebase, it then goes on to *error out* if the
commands disagree with the overall action (cherry-pick or revert).
Finally, the sequencer code chose to deviate from the interactive rebase
code insofar that when it comes to writing the file with the remaining
commands, it *reformats* the "todo" script instead of just writing the
part of the parsed script that were not yet processed. This is not only
unnecessary churn, but might well lose information that is valuable to
the user (i.e. comments after the commands).
Let's just bite the bullet and rewrite the entire parser; the code now
becomes not only more elegant: it allows us to go on and teach the
sequencer how to parse *true* "todo" scripts as used by the interactive
rebase itself. In a way, the sequencer is about to grow up to do its
older brother's job. Better.
In particular, we choose to maintain the list of commands in an array
instead of a linked list: this is flexible enough to allow us later on to
even implement rebase -i's reordering of fixup!/squash! commits very
easily (and with a very nice speed bonus, at least on Windows).
While at it, do not stop at the first problem, but list *all* of the
problems. This will help the user when the sequencer will do `rebase
-i`'s work by allowing to address all issues in one go rather than going
back and forth until the todo list is valid.

Not only does this DRY up the code (providing a better documentation what
the code is about, as well as allowing to change the behavior in a single
place), it also makes it substantially shorter to use the same
functionality in functions to be introduced when we teach the sequencer to
process interactive-rebase's git-rebase-todo file.

Over the next commits, we will work on improving the sequencer to the
point where it can process the todo script of an interactive rebase. To
that end, we will need to teach the sequencer to read interactive
rebase's todo file. In preparation, we consolidate all places where
that todo file is needed to call a function that we will later extend.

The sequencer is our attempt to lib-ify cherry-pick. Yet it behaves
like a one-shot command when it reads its configuration: memory is
allocated and released only when the command exits.
This is kind of okay for git-cherry-pick, which *is* a one-shot
command. All the work to make the sequencer its work horse was
done to allow using the functionality as a library function, though,
including proper clean-up after use.
To remedy that, take custody of the option values in question,
allocating and duping literal constants as needed and freeing them
at end.

the return value and passes it on to its callers, so its caller must
be already prepared to handle error returns, and with this step, we
make it notice an error return from this function.
So this is a safe conversion to make fast_forward_to() callable from
new callers that want it not to die, without changing the external
behaviour of anything existing.

Note that the function git_config_from_file(), called from

config code, and we also assume that we write the opts file
programmatically, hence any parse errors would be bugs.
