a75a30816d t5601: Remove trailing space in sed expression
The sed expression for IPv6, "Tested User And Host" or "tuah" used a wrong
sed expression, which doesn't work under all versions of sed.

3064d5a38c mingw: fix t5601-clone.sh
Since baaf233 (connect: improve check for plink to reduce false
positives, 2015-04-26), t5601 writes out a `plink.exe` for testing that
is actually a shell script. So the assumption that the `.exe` extension
implies that the file is *not* a shell script is now wrong.

Since there was no love for the idea of allowing `.exe` files to be
shell scripts on Windows, let's go the other way round: *make*
`plink.exe` a real `.exe`.

This fixes t5601-clone.sh in Git for Windows' SDK.

d95138e6 (setup: set env $GIT_WORK_TREE when work tree is set, like

c723e50d41 t/t5601-clone.sh: use the $( ... ) construct for command substitution
The Git CodingGuidelines prefer the $(...) construct for command
substitution instead of using the backquotes `...`.

The backquoted form is the traditional method for command
substitution, and is supported by POSIX. However, all but the
simplest uses become complicated quickly. In particular, embedded
command substitutions and/or the use of double quotes require
careful escaping with the backslash character.

The patch was generated by:

for _f in $(find . -name "*.sh")
do
	perl -i -pe 'BEGIN{undef $/;} s/`(.+?)`/\$(\1)/smg' "${_f}"
done

and then carefully proof-read.

86d26f240f setup.c: re-fix d95138e (setup: set env $GIT_WORK_TREE when ..
Commit d95138e [1] attempted to fix a .git file problem by
setting GIT_WORK_TREE whenever GIT_DIR is set. It sounded harmless
because we handle GIT_DIR and GIT_WORK_TREE side by side for most
commands, with two exceptions: git-init and git-clone.

"git clone" is not happy with d95138e. This command ignores GIT_DIR
but respects GIT_WORK_TREE [2] [3] which means it used to run fine
from a hook, where GIT_DIR was set but GIT_WORK_TREE was not (*).
With d95138e, GIT_WORK_TREE is set all the time and git-clone
interprets that as "I give you order to put the worktree here",
usually against the user's intention.

The solution in d95138e is reverted earlier, and instead we reuse
the solution from c056261 [4]. It fixed another setup-messed-
up-by-alias by saving and restoring env and spawning a new process,
but for git-clone and git-init only.

Now we conclude that setup-messed-up-by-alias is always evil. So the
env restoration is done for _all_ commands, including external ones,
whenever aliases are involved. It fixes what d95138e tried to fix,
without upsetting git-clone-inside-hooks.

The test from d95138e remains to verify it's not broken by this. A new
test is added to make sure git-clone-inside-hooks remains happy.

(*) GIT_WORK_TREE was not set _most of the time_. In some cases
GIT_WORK_TREE is set and git-clone will behave differently. The
use of GIT_WORK_TREE to direct git-clone to put work tree
elsewhere looks like a mistake because it causes surprises this
way. But that's a separate story.

323598387d pkt-line: support tracing verbatim pack contents
When debugging the pack protocol, it is sometimes useful to
store the verbatim pack that we sent or received on the
wire. Looking at the on-disk result is often not helpful for
a few reasons:

  1. If the operation is a clone, we destroy the repo on
     failure, leaving nothing on disk.

  2. If the pack is small, we unpack it immediately, and the
full pack never hits the disk.

  3. If we feed the pack to "index-pack --fix-thin", the
resulting pack has the extra delta bases added to it.

We already have a GIT_TRACE_PACKET mechanism for tracing
packets. Let's extend it with GIT_TRACE_PACKFILE to dump the
verbatim packfile.

There are a few other positive fallouts that come from
rearranging this code:

 - We currently disable the packet trace after seeing the
PACK header, even though we may get human-readable lines
on other sidebands; now we include them in the trace.

 - We currently try to print "PACK ..." in the trace to
indicate that the packfile has started. But because we
disable packet tracing, we never printed this line. We
   will now do so.

baaf233755 connect: improve check for plink to reduce false positives
The git_connect function has code to handle plink and tortoiseplink
specially, as they require different command line arguments from
OpenSSH (-P instead of -p for ports; tortoiseplink additionally requires
-batch). However, the match was done by checking for "plink" anywhere
in the string, which led to a GIT_SSH value containing "uplink" being
treated as an invocation of putty's plink.

Improve the check by looking for "plink" or "tortoiseplink" (or those
names suffixed with ".exe") only in the final component of the path.
This has the downside that a program such as "plink-0.63" would no
longer be recognized, but the increased robustness is likely worth it.
Add tests to cover these cases to avoid regressions.

d1018c2494 t5601: fix quotation error leading to skipped tests
One of the tests in t5601 used single quotes to delimit an argument
containing spaces. However, this caused test_expect_success to be
passed three arguments instead of two, which in turn caused the test
name to be treated as a prerequisite instead of a test name. As there
was no prerequisite called "bracketed hostnames are still ssh", the test
was always skipped.

Because this test was always skipped, the fact that it passed the
arguments in the wrong order was obscured. Use double quotes inside the
test and reorder the arguments so that the test runs and properly
reflects the arguments that are passed to ssh.

86ceb337ec connect.c: allow ssh://user@[2001:db8::1]/repo.git
The ssh:// syntax was added in 2386d658 (Add first cut at "git
protocol" connect logic., 2005-07-13), it accepted
ssh://user@2001:db8::1/repo.git, which is now legacy.

Over the years the parser was improved to support [] and port numbers,
but the combination of ssh://user@[2001:db8::1]:222/repo.git did
never work.

The only only way to use a user name, a literall IPV6 address and a port
number was ssh://[user@2001:db8::1]:222/repo.git

(Thanks to Christian Taube <lists@hcf.yourweb.de> for reporting this long
standing issue)

New users would use ssh://user@[2001:db8::1]:222/repo.git,
so change the parser to handle it correctly.

Support the old legacy URLs as well, to be backwards compatible,
and avoid regressions for users which upgrade an existing installation
to a later Git version.

0d7d285f0e clone: use git protocol for cloning shallow repo locally
clone_local() does not handle $SRC/shallow. It could be made so, but
it's simpler to use fetch-pack/upload-pack instead.

This used to be caught by the check in upload-pack, which is triggered
by transport_get_remote_refs(), even in local clone case. The check is
now gone and check_everything_connected() should catch the result
incomplete repo. But check_everything_connected() will soon be skipped
in local clone case, opening a door to corrupt repo. This patch should
close that door.

c59ab2e52a connect.c: refactor url parsing
Make the function is_local() in transport.c public, rename it into
url_is_local_not_ssh() and use it in both transport.c and connect.c

Use a protocol "local" for URLs for the local file system.

One note about using file:// under Windows:

The (absolute) path on Unix like system typically starts with "/".
When the host is empty, it can be omitted, so that a shell scriptlet
url=file://$pwd
will give a URL like "file:///home/user/repo".

Windows does not have the same concept of a root directory located in "/".
When parsing the URL allow "file://C:/user/repo"
(even if RFC1738 indicates that "file:///C:/user/repo" should be used).

This has not been working for "host:/~repo".

However, after 356bec "[::1]" was converted into "::1", yielding

8d3d28f5db clone: tighten "local paths with colons" check a bit
commit 6000334 (clone: allow cloning local paths with colons in them -
2013-05-04) made it possible to specify a path that has colons in it
without file://, e.g. ../foo:bar/somewhere. But the check was a bit
sloppy.

Consider the url '[foo]:bar'. The '[]' unwrapping code will turn the
string to 'foo\0:bar'. In effect this new string is the same as
'foo/:bar' in the check "path < strchrnul(host, '/')", which mistakes
it for a local path (with '/' before the first ':') when it's actually
not.

So disable the check for '/' before ':' when the URL has been mangled

68b939b2f0 clone: send diagnostic messages to stderr
Putting messages like "Cloning into.." and "done" on stdout
is un-Unix and uselessly clutters the stdout channel. Send
them to stderr.

We have to tweak two tests to accommodate this:

  1. t5601 checks for doubled output due to forking, and
doesn't actually care where the output goes; adjust it
     to check stderr.

  2. t5702 is trying to test whether progress output was
sent to stderr, but naively does so by checking
whether stderr produced any output. Instead, have it
look for "%", a token found in progress output but not
elsewhere (and which lets us avoid hard-coding the
     progress text in the test).

This should not regress any scripts that try to parse the
current output, as the output is already internationalized
and therefore unstable.

60003340cd clone: allow cloning local paths with colons in them
Usually "foo:bar" is interpreted as an ssh url. This patch allows to
clone from such paths by putting at least one slash before the colon
(i.e. /path/to/foo:bar or just ./foo:bar).

file://foo:bar should also work, but local optimizations are off in
that case, which may be unwanted. While at there, warn the users about
--local being ignored in this case.

5a7d5b683f clone: allow --branch to take a tag
Because a tag ref cannot be put to HEAD, HEAD will become detached.
This is consistent with "git checkout <tag>".

This is mostly useful in shallow clone, where it allows you to clone a
tag in addtion to branches.

e6baf4a1ae clone: clone from a repository with relative alternates
Cloning from a local repository blindly copies or hardlinks all the files
under objects/ hierarchy. This results in two issues:

 - If the repository cloned has an "objects/info/alternates" file, and the
command line of clone specifies --reference, the ones specified on the
command line get overwritten by the copy from the original repository.

 - An entry in a "objects/info/alternates" file can specify the object
stores it borrows objects from as a path relative to the "objects/"
directory. When cloning a repository with such an alternates file, if
the new repository is not sitting next to the original repository, such
relative paths needs to be adjusted so that they can be used in the new
   repository.

This updates add_to_alternates_file() to take the path to the alternate
object store, including the "/objects" part at the end (earlier, it was
taking the path to $GIT_DIR and was adding "/objects" itself), as it is
technically possible to specify in objects/info/alternates file the path
of a directory whose name does not end with "/objects".

dbc92b072d clone: allow more than one --reference
Also add a test to expose a long-standing bug that is triggered when
cloning with --reference option from a local repository that has its own
alternates. The alternate object stores specified on the command line
are lost, and only alternates copied from the source repository remain.
The bug will be fixed in the next patch.

8f323c00dd config: drop support for GIT_CONFIG_NOGLOBAL
Now that test-lib sets $HOME to protect against pollution from user
settings, GIT_CONFIG_NOGLOBAL is not needed for use by the test
suite any more. And as luck would have it, a quick code search
reveals no other users in the wild.

This patch does not affect GIT_CONFIG_NOSYSTEM, which is still
needed.

730220de8b Do not unquote + into ' ' in URLs
Since 9d2e942 (decode file:// and ssh:// URLs, 2010-05-23) the URL
logic unquotes escaped URLs. For the %2B type of escape, this is
conformant with RFC 2396. However, it also unquotes + into a space
character, which is only appropriate for the query strings in HTTP.
This notably broke fetching from the gtk+ repository.

We cannot just remove the corresponding code since the same
url_decode_internal() is also used by the HTTP backend to decode query
parameters. Introduce a new argument that controls whether the +
decoding happens, and use it only in the (client-side) url_decode().
