5491e9e29e Makefile: propagate NATIVE_CRLF to C
Commit 95f31e9a (convert: The native line-ending is \r\n on MinGW,
2010-09-04) correctly points out that the NATIVE_CRLF setting is
incorrectly set on Mingw git. However, the Makefile variable is not
propagated to the C preprocessor and results in no change. This patch
pushes the definition to the C code and adds a test to validate that
when core.eol as native is crlf, we actually normalize text files to
this line ending convention when core.autocrlf is false.

66e1fe7db6 t/t0026-eol-config.sh: avoid "test <cond> -a/-o <cond>"
The construct is error-prone; "test" being built-in in most modern
shells, the reason to avoid "test <cond> && test <cond>" spawning
one extra process by using a single "test <cond> -a <cond>" no
longer exists.

8deeab4a24 t0026-eol-config.sh: use the $( ... ) construct for command substitution
The Git CodingGuidelines prefer the $(...) construct for command
substitution instead of using the backquotes `...`.

The backquoted form is the traditional method for command
substitution, and is supported by POSIX. However, all but the
simplest uses become complicated quickly. In particular, embedded
command substitutions and/or the use of double quotes require
careful escaping with the backslash character.

The patch was generated by:

for _f in $(find . -name "*.sh")
do
   sed -i 's@`\(.*\)`@$(\1)@g' ${_f}
done

and then carefully proof-read.

a48fcd8369 tests: add missing &&
Breaks in a test assertion's && chain can potentially hide
failures from earlier commands in the chain.

Commands intended to fail should be marked with !, test_must_fail, or
test_might_fail. The examples in this patch do not require that.

942e774767 Add "core.eol" config variable
Introduce a new configuration variable, "core.eol", that allows the user
to set which line endings to use for end-of-line-normalized files in the
working directory. It defaults to "native", which means CRLF on Windows
and LF everywhere else.

Note that "core.autocrlf" overrides core.eol. This means that

[core]
	autocrlf = true

puts CRLFs in the working directory even if core.eol is set to "lf".
