1249d8ad1c user-manual: Standardize backtick quoting
I tried to always use backticks for:
* Paths and filenames (e.g. `.git/config`)
* Compound refs (e.g. `origin/HEAD`)
* Git commands (e.g. `git log`)
* Command arguments (e.g. `--pretty`)
* URLs (e.g. `git://`), as a subset of command arguments
* Special characters (e.g. `+` in diffs).
* Config options (e.g. `branch.<name>.remote`)

Branch and tag names are sometimes set off with double quotes,
sometimes set off with backticks, and sometimes left bare. I tried to
judge when the intention was introducing new terms or conventions
(double quotes), to reference a recently used command argument
(backticks), or to reference the abstract branch/commit (left bare).
Obviously these are not particularly crisp definitions, so my
decisions are fairly arbitrary ;). When a reference had already been
introduced, I changed further double-quoted instances to backticked
instances.

When new backticks increased the length of a line beyond others in
that block, I re-wrapped blocks to 72 columns.

9148673377 user-manual: Flesh out uncommitted changes and submodule updates
If you try and update a submodule with a dirty working directory, you
get an error message like:

  $ git submodule update
error: Your local changes to the following files would be overwritten by checkout:
  ...
Please, commit your changes or stash them before you can switch branches.
  Aborting
  ...

Mention this in the submodule notes. The previous phrase was short
enough that I originally thought it might have been referring to the
reflog note (obviously, uncommitted changes will not show up in the
reflog either ;).

6c26bf4d4e user-manual: Reorganize the reroll sections, adding 'git rebase -i'
I think this interface is often more convenient than extended cherry
picking or using 'git format-patch'. In fact, I removed the
cherry-pick section entirely. The entry-level suggestions for
rerolling are now:

    1. git commit --amend
    2. git format-patch origin
       git reset --hard origin
       ...edit and reorder patches...
       git am *.patch
    3. git rebase -i origin

48a8c26c62 Documentation: avoid poor-man's small caps GIT
In the earlier days, we used to spell the name of the system as GIT,
to simulate as if it were typeset with capital G and IT in small
caps. Later we stopped doing so at around 1.6.5 days.

Let's stop doing so throughout the documentation. The name to refer
to the whole system (and the concept it embodies) is "Git"; the
command end-users type is "git". And document this in the coding
guideline.

The discussion of email subject throughout the documentation is
misleading; it indicates that the first line will always become

6cf378f0cb docs: stop using asciidoc no-inline-literal
In asciidoc 7, backticks like `foo` produced a typographic
effect, but did not otherwise affect the syntax. In asciidoc
8, backticks introduce an "inline literal" inside which markup
is not interpreted. To keep compatibility with existing
documents, asciidoc 8 has a "no-inline-literal" attribute to
keep the old behavior. We enabled this so that the
documentation could be built on either version.

It has been several years now, and asciidoc 7 is no longer
in wide use. We can now decide whether or not we want
inline literals on their own merits, which are:

  1. The source is much easier to read when the literal
contains punctuation. You can use `master~1` instead
     of `master{tilde}1`.

  2. They are less error-prone. Because of point (1), we
tend to make mistakes and forget the extra layer of
     quoting.

This patch removes the no-inline-literal attribute from the
Makefile and converts every use of backticks in the
documentation to an inline literal (they must be cleaned up,
or the example above would literally show "{tilde}" in the
output).

Problematic sites were found by grepping for '`.*[{\\]' and
examined and fixed manually. The results were then verified
by comparing the output of "html2text" on the set of
generated html pages. Doing so revealed that in addition to
making the source more readable, this patch fixes several
formatting bugs:

  - HTML rendering used the ellipsis character instead of
literal "..." in code examples (like "git log A...B")

  - some code examples used the right-arrow character
instead of '->' because they failed to quote

  - api-config.txt did not quote tilde, and the resulting
HTML contained a bogus snippet like:

      <tt></tt> foo <tt>bar</tt>

which caused some parsers to choke and omit whole
    sections of the page.

  - git-commit.txt confused ``foo`` (backticks inside a
    literal) with ``foo'' (matched double-quotes)

  - mentions of `A U Thor <author@example.com>` used to
erroneously auto-generate a mailto footnote for
    author@example.com

  - the description of --word-diff=plain incorrectly showed
the output as "[-removed-] and {added}", not "{+added+}".

  - using "prime" notation like:

commit `C` and its replacement `C'`

confused asciidoc into thinking that everything between
the first backtick and the final apostrophe were meant
    to be inside matched quotes

  - asciidoc got confused by the escaping of some of our
    asterisks. In particular,

      `credential.\*` and `credential.<url>.\*`

properly escaped the asterisk in the first case, but
literally passed through the backslash in the second
    case.

c6a13b2c86 fsck: --no-dangling omits "dangling object" information
The default output from "fsck" is often overwhelmed by informational
message on dangling objects, especially if you do not repack often, and a
real error can easily be buried.

Add "--no-dangling" option to omit them, and update the user manual to
demonstrate its use.

Based on a patch by Clemens Buchacher, but reverted the part to change
the default to --no-dangling, which is unsuitable for the first patch.
The usual three-step procedure to break the backward compatibility over
time needs to happen on top of this, if we were to go in that direction.

73a1d050c4 User Manual: Write "Git" instead of "GIT"
In the Table of Contents, there is a notable inconsistency:
first there is "GIT Glossary", followed by "Git Quick Reference"
on the very next line.

Running "grep -c" on user-manual.txt, I find 780 occurrrences of
"git", 37 occurrences of "Git", and 9 occurrences of "GIT".
In general, "git" is the preferred spelling, except at the
beginning of a sentence.

Therefore, change "GIT Glossary" to "Git Glossary" for consistency
with the rest of the document.

Looking at the other eight occurrences of "GIT" I found one other
occurrence that should be changed:

* The mention of "StGIT". Looking at the web pages for "Stacked Git"
at http://www.procode.org/stgit, I only saw the spelling "StGit",
  except in http://wiki.procode.org/cgi-bin/wiki.cgi/StGIT_Tutorial,
but that page was last updated in 2006.

The other seven occurrences should not be changed:

* Three occurrences were in the output of 'git show-branch' run
  on the git.git repository.

* One occurrence was in the output of 'git cat-file'.

* One occurrence was as part of the file name "GIT-VERSION-GEN".

* Two occurrences were in comments in scripts quoted in a description
  of Tony Luck's workflow.

e63ec003b2 user-manual: Document that "git merge" doesn't like uncommited changes.
We explain the user why uncommited changes can be problematic with merge,
and point to "commit" and "stash" for the solution. While talking about
commited Vs uncommited changes, we also make it clear that the result of
a merge is normally commited.
